Why I joined SimplyFun? Because I discovered a treasure!

Why did I join SimplyFun? Because I discovered a treasure that I have to share! Hi! I am a school based Speech therapist in RI working with preschoolers and I joined SimplyFun in November 2019 because the games are amazing and fit perfectly with my philosophy of learning through play!! 

Every year I get to help my preschool students to improve their speech and language skills and SimpyFun is a great tool in my bag of tricks! I love that the SimplyFun website lets you search by age or topic and includes tabs for Special needs and Autism! Plus there are videos showing how each game is played! These games are perfect for teachers, homeschool moms and family fun! Check it out for yourself!

Why SimplyFun is Perfect for Teachers!

Best SimplyFun Preschool Games

1. Digger’s Garden Match- This fun game is for ages 4+, takes about 15 minutes and 1-6 children can play! Learn colors, shapes and counting up to 50!

2. Lily Pond- This reading and spelling game is for ages 4+, takes about 15 minutes and 2-4 children can play! Hop the frog around the pond to build foundational reading skills and spelling.

3. Share a Berry- This great game is for ages 3+, takes about 30 minutes and is for 2-4 players. Collect berries while building fine motor and turn taking skills.

4. Animal Snacks- Have fun feeding animals to build matching and turn taking skills! This game is for ages 3+, takes about 10 minutes and is for 2-5 players.

5.  Bee Alert- Build memory, fine motor and turn taking skills while finding hidden bees! This game is for 5+, takes 15-20 minutes and is for 2-5 players.

5 Tips for teaching children how to play board games

Does your family love playing board games? Do you have a child who is struggling to join in? Check out the 5 tips below to help your child learn how to play board games so they can join in the family fun!

Board games range from simple to more complex.  You can choose a game that matches your child’s ability or you can modify a board game to meet the needs of the child.  These steps will teach your child how to play board games and once they are familiar with how to play the game (the setup), they can then focus on the content of the game!

1. Introduce the game board: Ask your child what they see on the board. Talk about the pictures or writing. Identify the start and finish or the game and note special spaces. Have your child trace the path from start to finish.

2. Introduce the game pieces: Include items such as spinners, dice, pawns or tokens. Explain to your child by describing its function. As you explain let them explore the items (spinners, dice) so they know how to use them.

3. Practice moving the game pieces around the game board: You can use hand-over-hand assistance if needed. 

4.  Practice playing the game without the prompts or cards from the game: Instead, play the game but ask the child questions they know the answer to help them learn the game formate. (i.e. “What is your name?”, “What is the dog’s name?”, “How old are you?”)

5. Read/Review the game directions: Have your child repeat the directions back to you to make sure they understand how to play.  When they are ready have fun playing!!
